Introduced in 2007, the Sumo is one of Seiko’s youngest diving watches, and also one of the most loved by enthusiasts.
Three models were presented at launch: SBDC001 (black), SBDC003 (blue, also known as “Blumo”) and SBDC005 (orange). These were the first divers to house the 6R15 automatic caliber, produced entirely in-house, as usual for Seiko.
The name “Sumo”, chosen by enthusiasts and later adopted by Seiko itself, is due to various design aspects of the watch, which are discussed in this excellent article on Seiko-Design.com.
First generation
The first generation of Sumo was introduced in 2007 with three references, in black, blue and orange, housing the 6R15 automatic movement, produced in-house and equipped with manual winding and hacking functions.
The three main references are followed by limited editions in different colors. This generation will be the first and last without the X of Prospex on the dial.

Second generation
With the second generation, the Sumo becomes part of the Prospex line, and the famous X appears on the dial of the various models. The 6R15 movement remains unchanged, like all the relevant specs.
