The world’s first diver watch featuring a Hi-Beat movement, the first to sport a titanium case, and the first equipped with a quartz movement: these are just a few of the numerous pioneering achievements by Seiko, accomplished over decades of research and development in the field of underwater timepieces.
In this guide, you will discover the diver watch models arranged in chronological order, with a focus on those of the greatest historical and collectible interest.
1965
62MAS, the first Seiko diver’s watch
Launched in July 1965 on the Japanese market, the 62MAS is Seiko’s first diving watch, capable of ensuring water resistance for dives up to 150 meters deep.
The design, developed by Taro Tanaka and Tatsuro Akabane, follows the classic lines of the skin divers of the time, while the name 62MAS derives from “SeikoMAtic Selfdater”, and from the automatic movement 6217A, belonging to the 62 caliber family.
The first model 6217-8000, produced only between April and June 1965, is nicknamed “62MAS Small Crown” because the size of the crown is smaller compared to the later version 6217-8001.

Launched in May 1968 on the Japanese market, the 6159-7000 is the world’s first diver with a Hi-Beat movement. It is the evolution of the previous 6215-7000, from which it inherits the design and the monoblock case.

Diver’s watch 150 m 6105-8000
Launched in May 1968 on the Japanese market, it emerges as the successor to the 62MAS, with a design still by Taro Tanaka.
Most specimens house the automatic caliber 6105A, but in some of the last pieces produced, the B version of the movement is found, which adds the hacking feature.
Among enthusiasts, there has never been agreement on the nickname of this model: some call it Pre-Willard, others Slim Willard, while more recently Seiko itself has defined it “Turtle Origin”, despite the case being significantly different from that of the models commonly defined Turtle.

It houses the automatic movement 6105B, which unlike the previous version A, features a hacking mechanism.
In Japan, this model is often associated with explorer and mountaineer Naomi Uemura, while in the rest of the world it is better known as “Seiko Willard” due to the movie Apocalypse Now.

Grandfather Tuna
Launched in June 1975 on the Japanese market, it is the world’s first professional diver with a titanium case, designed by Taro Tanaka together with engineer Ikuo Tokunaga.
More than 20 patents were awarded for the design of the watch case alone.
The nickname “Tuna” comes from its shape, reminiscent of a tuna can. The 6159-7010 is often called by enthusiasts “Grandfather Tuna”, for being the first in a long series of models that inherited this type of design.

1976

The version for the export market houses the automatic movement 6309, instead of the 6306 for the Japanese market model which has a higher number of jewels (21 instead of 17) and the hacking feature.
